Search Engine Optimisation or SEO

There is so much information on Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, on the web that I thought I must add my 2 cents worth as well. There are lots of blogs on the complicated details of Search Engine Optimisation and the ins and outs of optimising a website to rank on Google but understandably, business owners don’t really need to know all that. This blog describes the simple theory and basic reasons behind optimising your website for search engines and why you, as a business owner should consider search engine optimisation as one of the, if not the main, lead generator for your service or product.

Normally, if I refer to a search engine I am talking about Google as it is the numero uno search engine, in my eyes. The same principles apply to all the other search engines and if you can get your website ranking on Google, you will rank on the others. Other search engines include Yahoo! Search, Live Search, Alta Vista, AOL Search. You can view a more comprehensive list of search engines on the Wikipedia article here > List of search engines.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the term given to the process of optimising a website to rank well in search engines. There are many different aspects that contribute to a website ranking well and the main aspects are the way the website is built, the text content and the number of incoming links. The number of incoming links is probably the main contributor to a website search engine ranking. The more quality links you get, the higher Google rates your website. Incoming links from quality sites related to your websites content are best, Google also gives preference to links from government sites.

Most of the time if your just starting a business or your website is new, you won’t have the links coming into your website. Never fear, there are ways to help Google find, read and remember your website.

Web design studios should keep up-to-date with web standards and incorporate as many Google friendly SEO factors into their design process as they can.
